Cheltenham School District Cancels 2026 Football Seasons Amid Toxic Culture Probe

Superintendent Brian Scriven cites insufficient supervision and a toxic environment after a September 2023 locker room assault

The Cheltenham Township School District announced that it will cancel the 2026 varsity and junior varsity football seasons, citing ongoing investigations and the need to address a toxic culture within the program.

Superintendent Brian Scriven said the district must complete a series of critical tasks before the programs can resume, and he outlined new protocols designed to prevent future misconduct.

Investigation uncovers systemic failures

An external review found that roughly twenty students were present during a September 2023 locker‑room assault, with several either participating or filming the incident. The inquiry concluded that supervision was inadequate and that a toxic environment had taken root within the football program.

The district had previously halted the 2023 season after hazing allegations surfaced, and the latest findings have intensified scrutiny from police, the district attorney’s office and state education officials.

While the upper teams will be absent next year, a ninth‑grade squad will still be fielded, and students seeking to transfer can turn to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association for guidance. The district also plans to explore opportunities for a pep band, drumline, color guard and cheerleading, and will provide wraparound support services and licensed counselors for those affected.
