A scandal that shook the Cheltenham School District came to light in August 2025 when a 15‑year‑old football player was assaulted by teammates in a locker room.
Four coaches — Terence Tolbert, Darian "DJ" McFadden, Benjamin Johnson III and Ralph Burnley — were charged with endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy, while six players, including Isaiah Simpson and Josia Peeler, faced aggravated assault and false swearing accusations.
Prosecutors say the assault involved physical restraints and a broomstick used to poke the victim while he was still in his football gear, and that the coaches had discussed handling the matter privately rather than reporting it to the boy’s mother or school officials.
The victim’s mother only learned of the incident days later, prompting medical treatment that confirmed a contusion, after which the case was escalated to law enforcement.
Leadership Transition
Amid the fallout, Dr. Brian Scriven resigned as superintendent of the district, citing community challenges and the need for new leadership, effective immediately.
The district has named Joshua Sweigard, its Director of Business Services, as acting superintendent while the school board prepares to select a permanent replacement at its upcoming meeting on August 11.
Community leaders say the episode has sparked a broader conversation about student safety, oversight of athletic programs, and the importance of transparent reporting mechanisms.
