Cheney Tech Chargers Prepare for Class L Challenge

A blend of seasoned starters and new talent aims to rebound after a strong 2021 run

A Fresh Start for the Chargers

After years of competing in Class MM, Cheney Tech has moved up to Class L through a newly formed co‑op with Windham Tech. The shift not only elevates the level of competition but also signals a strategic effort to rebuild a program that last reached the postseason in 2021.

Head coach Tony Bonito, now in his fourth season, brings a career record of 15‑15 and an overall tally of 145‑160‑4. His familiarity with the team and his confidence in the upcoming roster have set a tone of optimism that permeates the preseason preparations.

The Chargers return nine starters from the previous year, highlighted by quarterback Jaxon Selley, who provides continuity and experience under center. At the same time, Windham Tech contributes five or six newcomers who instantly add depth and seasoned play, strengthening both the offensive and defensive fronts.

Early in the schedule, Cheney Tech will test its mettle against ATI, the defending top CTC team from last season, in Week 2. The slate also includes matchups with Rocky Hill, Thames River Co‑op, O’Brien Tech, Vinal/Goodwin Tech, Westhill, Bullard Havens Tech, Wilcox/Kaynor Tech, Platt Tech, and Prince Tech, promising a demanding but revealing campaign.

Special teams are anchored by kicker/punter Michael Porter, while receivers Scott Mancus and Julian Roldan lead a revitalized receiving corps. With a defense that limited opponents to an average of 17.4 points per game last year and bolstered by returning linemen from Windham Tech, the Chargers feel well‑equipped to compete and aim for a postseason return.
