Cherry Valley’s city council is currently deliberating the names that will be assigned to two brand‑new baseball and softball fields that are slated to open this summer.
The conversation gained momentum when former mayor Mike Wood suggested honoring Ricky Harrison for his role in securing the facilities, while the council also considered a tribute to Larry Harris, whose family historically owned the parcel on which the fields will sit.
Criteria for commemoration
The matter has been referred to the Cherry Valley Park Committee, which will draft naming criteria that balance legacy, contribution and community impact before any final decision is made.
Future naming possibilities
Mayor Dennis Stephens noted that individual sections of the complex could receive separate dedications, allowing multiple contributors to be recognized without crowding a single title.
The council plans to revisit the issue at its June meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry Valley City Hall, where the committee’s recommendations are expected to be presented.
