Cheyenne Covarrubias appointed new boys’ soccer head coach at Lincoln Southeast High School

Former Islander star returns to lead program with championship pedigree

Lincoln Southeast High School announced this week that Cheyenne Covarrubias will take the reins of the boys' soccer program as its new head coach. The appointment comes as the school looks to build on a legacy of consistent performance and tournament appearances.

Covarrubias, a 2013 graduate of Grand Island Senior High, was a key contributor to the Islanders' soccer team, helping the club reach the state tournament in each of his final three seasons. His playing career was marked by midfield dominance and leadership that left a lasting imprint on the program.

After completing a season as an assistant boys' varsity soccer coach and head junior varsity coach at Standing Bear High School in 2023, Covarrubias gained hands‑on experience that he now brings to his new role. The move marks a return to the Lincoln area for a coach who previously helped shape the next generation of players in the region.

Building on a winning tradition

The Knights have qualified for the state tournament 14 times, with three of those appearances occurring in the past four seasons. This track record of excellence provides a solid foundation for Covarrubias to build upon as he outlines his vision for the program.

In his introductory remarks, Covarrubias emphasized the importance of maintaining the school's culture of success while setting ambitious goals for future seasons. He expressed confidence that the team's depth and work ethic would enable them to compete at the highest level.
