Chicago Defensive Back Tavares Harrington Commits to Michigan Over Alabama and Notre Dame

The 6‑foot‑3, 180‑pound prospect chooses the Wolverines, reshaping the 2027 class landscape.

A Recruitment That Signals a Shift

A highly touted defensive back from the Chicago suburbs has chosen the University of Michigan over traditional powerhouses Alabama and Notre Dame, cementing a recruiting coup for the Wolverines.

Standing at 6‑foot‑3 and 180 pounds, Harrington is celebrated for his versatility, capable of patrolling the secondary at cornerback or safety, a trait that attracted Michigan’s defensive coordinator.

The commitment comes as Michigan boasts a deep history of producing elite defensive backs and has been aggressive in recruiting Chicago talent, a factor that heavily influenced Harrington’s decision.

During his junior season he recorded 50 tackles, nine pass breakups and three interceptions, numbers that helped him rise to No. 8 among safeties and No. 124 overall in the national rankings.

His recruitment journey included official visits to Alabama and Notre Dame, but after a scheduled June 19‑21 trip to Michigan’s Victor’s Weekend, he elected to stay home, a move facilitated by new safeties coach Tyler Stockton who continued the dialogue started by the previous staff.

The pledge also adds to a 2027 class that already includes 14 commitments, underscoring Michigan’s intent to maintain a pipeline of top defensive talent.
