Chicago Public Schools announced on Thursday that all eight of its Public League football games scheduled for that day have been postponed because of extreme heat across the city.
Heatwave Disrupts Football Schedule
The cancellations affect a slate of matchups that were slated to unfold at various historic venues, including Rockne, Brooks, Winnemac, Orr, Lane, and Stagg Stadium, with kickoff times ranging from 4:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Among the eight contests are Back of the Yards versus Kelly at Rockne at 4:30 p.m., Corliss versus Brooks at Brooks at 5:30 p.m., Foreman versus Uplift at Winnemac at 4:30 p.m., Goode versus Orr at Orr at 4:30 p.m., Hubbard versus Muchin at Lane at 4:15 p.m., Little Village versus Schurz at Lane at 7:30 p.m., Longwood versus Hansberry at Stagg Stadium at 4:30 p.m., and a North Lawndale matchup at Perspectives.
While the district has not set a firm rescheduled date, officials say the most likely window for returning play is the Labor Day holiday weekend, when the packed Friday and Saturday schedules at the stadiums may allow for make‑up games.
Coaches and players expressed disappointment but understanding, noting that the safety of athletes must take precedence over the competitive calendar, and that the league will work to align the postponed contests with the available slots.
