Chris Downs, the winningest head coach in St. Lawrence University men's basketball history, has been appointed interim head coach of the women's basketball team. Over 29 seasons, Downs amassed more than 400 career victories and guided the men's program to 22 NCAA tournament appearances, including runs to the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen. His teams have consistently ranked among the nation’s best in field‑goal‑percentage defense, a testament to the aggressive, pressure‑filled schemes he instills.
Downs’ impact extends beyond wins. He has mentored two National All‑Americans, nine All‑East Region selections and dozens of conference honorees, while serving as a voter on the NABC Division III All‑America Committee. His recent induction of the 1996‑97 and 1998‑99 squads into the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame underscores his lasting legacy.
