Chris Hart Takes the Helm as NC State Baseball Head Coach

After three decades under Elliott Avent, longtime assistant Chris Hart is promoted, bringing a recruiting pedigree and a vision for future success

A New Era for Wolfpack Baseball

Elliott Avent announced his retirement at the conclusion of the current season, ending a 30‑year tenure that produced more than 1,100 victories and three appearances in the College World Series for NC State.

The university’s board of trustees quickly moved to name Chris Hart, Avent’s assistant for 22 years, as the new head coach, approving his contract on Friday morning.

Hart, who has served as the program’s lead recruiter since 2010, said he is humbled by the opportunity and grateful for the confidence placed in him, promising to build on the foundation laid by Avent.

Under Hart’s guidance, NC State’s recruiting classes have featured future MLB stars such as Carlos Rodón and Trea Turner, and in the most recent draft, 14 position players earned selections, including two in the first round.

Athletics director Boo Corrigan praised Hart’s baseball knowledge and his ability to attract talent, noting that the team’s current record of 33‑22 keeps them on the cusp of the 64‑team NCAA Tournament.

Hart’s own playing background includes four seasons at Florida State under legendary coach Mike Martin and a 48th‑round selection by the Boston Red Sox in 1998, underscoring a lifelong connection to the sport.
