North Carolina State University announced on Tuesday that Chris Hart will assume the role of head baseball coach, succeeding Elliott Avent, who retired after three decades at the helm of the program.
Hart brings eleven years of service as associate head coach, during which he helped shape a recruiting pipeline that produced 32 professional draft picks, among them three‑time MLB All‑Star Trea Turner, and earned him the 2021 Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year honor.

His tenure also saw the Wolfpack become a consistent contender in the ACC and nationally, highlighted by a 32‑22 regular‑season record and a 14‑16 conference slate in the most recent campaign.
The university’s Board of Trustees University Affairs Committee approved Hart’s contract during an emergency meeting, underscoring the administration’s confidence in his ability to sustain the program’s upward trajectory.
Avent departs as the career wins leader in N.C. State history, his 1,103 victories at the school and 1,327 overall marking a storied era that included multiple ACC titles and consistent national rankings.
With Selection Monday looming, the Wolfpack awaits word on its NCAA Tournament prospects, a moment that will test whether Hart’s vision can translate into postseason play.
