Chris Johnson, a 6‑foot‑5 guard who spent his first three seasons at the University of Central Florida, has officially committed to the Oregon State Beavers for his senior year. The move comes after the guard entered the transfer portal in April and attracted attention from several programs looking to add experience to their backcourt.
At UCF, Johnson posted averages of 6.2 points per game while shooting 36.5 percent from beyond the arc. Those numbers, while modest, reflect a player who has learned to contribute in a balanced offensive system and who brings a veteran presence to a team that reached the NCAA Tournament as a No. 10 seed last season.
Coach Joyner’s Vision
Coach Justin Joyner of the Beavers highlighted Johnson’s blend of size, shooting ability and basketball IQ, stating that the guard should be able to make an immediate impact in the Pac‑12 conference. Joyner emphasized that Johnson’s experience from a 21‑12 campaign that included a Big 12 finish of seventh will help stabilize a roster that is still finding its identity.
The addition of Johnson also underscores a larger trend in college basketball, where the transfer portal continues to reshape team compositions across the nation. Several other UCF alumni have announced moves, and programs are increasingly relying on seasoned transfers to bridge gaps in talent and depth.
With the Beavers aiming to climb higher in the conference standings, the coaching staff believes that Johnson’s skill set will complement the existing lineup and provide a reliable option for scoring and ball distribution as the season progresses.
