Former East Carolina University standout and Pirates Hall of Famer Chris Johnson has publicly disclosed that he is living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.
Johnson, who enjoyed a decade‑long career in the NFL after being selected in the first round of the 2008 draft, reflected on how the disease has reshaped his physical abilities while emphasizing that his identity remains unchanged.
A Voice Beyond the Field
To communicate, Johnson now relies on a voice‑generation device, a tool that has become both a practical necessity and a symbol of his resilience.
In a recent statement, the university praised the athlete’s determination, noting that his perseverance continues to inspire teammates, fans, and the broader community.
Johnson’s career highlights include more than 4,200 rushing yards, 42 touchdowns, and a 2,000‑yard season in 2009 that set an NFL record for total scrimmage yards, achievements that cemented his status as an ECU legend.
Though his body has been challenged by ALS, Johnson says the diagnosis has not altered his sense of self, a sentiment echoed in his public remarks about staying true to who he is.
