Northern Michigan University announced this week that Chris Kamal, a former standout goaltender for the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, will join the Wildcats' coaching staff as an assistant.
Kamal spent the past year on the coaching staff at Alaska-Anchorage, where he contributed to player development and recruitment efforts.
During his playing years from 2010 to 2014, Kamal backstopped the Seawolves in 71 games, posting a 3.03 goals‑against average and a .888 save percentage, numbers that still rank among the program’s best.
A Proven Legacy in the Net
He holds several UAA records, notably three shutouts in a single season, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2014.
Before his coaching stint, Kamal honed his skills with the Anchorage Wolverines of the North American Hockey League and the Atlanta Fire Hockey Club, experiences that broadened his international outlook.
Shyiak’s Praise
Dave Shyiak, who previously coached at Alaska-Anchorage and earned a national championship as a player at Northern Michigan in 1991, praised Kamal’s reputation in goalie development and his ability to connect with recruits abroad.
He added that the hire reflects the program’s commitment to strengthening its defensive foundation while expanding its recruiting network across the globe.
