A Homecoming for a Proven Winner
Coastal Carolina University announced today that Chris Lemonis, a native of Myrtle Beach and a 1992 graduate of The Citadel, will take over as the seventh head baseball coach in program history. He replaces Kevin Schnall, who departed to lead the South Carolina Gamecocks program. The university’s athletic director highlighted Lemonis’s deep ties to the region and his reputation as a relentless recruiter and tactician.
Lemonis arrives after a tenure at Mississippi State that culminated in the Bulldogs capturing the 2021 NCAA National Championship. Over 11 seasons at Indiana and Mississippi State, he compiled a career record of 373‑226‑2 and guided his teams to six NCAA Tournament appearances, two College World Series runs, and a string of conference titles. His 2021 squad earned him Baseball America’s National Coach of the Year honor.
A Journey Built on Experience and Development
Before his championship run at Mississippi State, Lemonis spent four seasons at Indiana, where he posted a 141‑91‑2 record and led the Hoosiers to three NCAA Tournament berths. His earlier years at Louisville, where he served as an assistant and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons, preceded a 12‑year climb at The Citadel, rising to associate head coach after helping the Bulldogs reach the 1990 College World Series as a player.
Throughout his career, Lemonis has been credited with developing 111 MLB Draft selections, 22 major‑league players, 38 All‑Americans and 19 Freshman All‑Americans. His ability to mold talent has made him a sought‑after figure in collegiate baseball circles, and his return to South Carolina is being hailed as a strategic move to sustain the Chanticleers’ recent momentum.
