Chris Lemonis Returns to Lead Coastal Carolina Baseball
Coastal Carolina University announced on June 11 that Chris Lemonis, the former Mississippi State baseball coach, has been named its new head coach, marking a strategic move aimed at revitalizing the program and restoring national relevance.
Lemonis brings a championship pedigree, having guided Mississippi State to the College World Series in 2019 and 2021, culminating in a national title in 2021. Under his stewardship the Bulldogs posted a 232–135 record, a testament to his ability to develop talent and sustain competitive play.
Athletic director Chance Miller praised Lemonis, stating that his proven leadership and deep understanding of collegiate baseball make him the ideal candidate to steer Coastal Carolina toward its next era of success.
The hiring follows Lemonis' dismissal from Mississippi State in April 2025, a decision that opened the door for Brian O'Connor, a seasoned coach with his own extensive résumé, to take over the Bulldogs. O'Connor, who previously served as an assistant at The Citadel from 1995 to 2006 before stints at Indiana and Mississippi State, is expected to fill the vacancy left by Lemonis.
Lemonis' journey in college baseball spans decades, beginning with his long tenure as an assistant at The Citadel, where he honed his tactical acumen and built lasting relationships with players and staff. His next challenge will be to translate that experience into immediate impact for the Chanticleers, whose fan base in Myrtle Beach and Conway eagerly anticipates a return to national relevance.
