Chris MacFarland reshapes Nashville Predators ahead of free agency

The new President of Hockey Operations outlines key trades and a long‑term vision for the franchise

Chris MacFarland, who only weeks ago stepped into the dual role of President of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the Nashville Predators, has already begun reshaping the roster.

His first major move came in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche, where he acquired forward Ross Colton and goaltender Isak Posch, sending draft picks and prospect Magnus Chrona the other way. In a separate deal, he flipped Zachary L’Heureux and Fedor Svechkov for forwards Jack Drury and Chase Bradley, plus an additional draft selection.

Building a Defensive Core

Jack Drury, a 26‑year‑old two‑way center who appeared in all 82 games for Colorado last season, is viewed by MacFarland as one of the league’s elite defensive forwards. He remains a restricted free agent and will need a new contract, but MacFarland believes his presence will instantly elevate the team’s culture and aid the development of younger players.

Alongside Drury, Colton brings a hard‑nosed, competitive style, capable of playing both wing and center, and still has a year left on his contract. MacFarland emphasized that both players add depth and versatility to the lineup.

Coaching continuity was also a priority; MacFarland announced that Head Coach Andrew Brunette and his entire staff will remain in place for the upcoming season, providing stability as the roster evolves.

Looking ahead, the Predators will enter the July free‑agency period with an eye on younger talent, a strategy MacFarland says could complement the core he is assembling. He expressed optimism about the team’s future while acknowledging that success will require time and careful planning.
