Chris Mack stepped into the role of head coach for the University of South Florida’s men’s basketball team in March 2024, inheriting a program that had been stripped of every scholarship player just months earlier.
A Roster Reborn
Rather than waiting for a slow rebuild, Mack turned to the transfer portal and the high school class, securing 12 transfers and three freshmen to fill the void. The resulting squad blends seniors, a graduate student, juniors, sophomores and newcomers, creating a depth that was absent a year ago.
Central to Mack’s philosophy is retention and stability. He has spoken repeatedly about the need to keep the new pieces together, emphasizing that continuity will be the foundation of the Bulls’ future success.
Among the returning pieces is sophomore forward Joshua Lewis, son of USF Hall of Famer Fred Lewis. After a season‑ending injury, Lewis is expected to be fully ready for the upcoming campaign, adding a familiar scoring threat to the lineup.
A Proven Track Record
Mack brings a career win‑loss percentage near .680 and nine NCAA Tournament appearances to Tampa, credentials that have generated optimism among fans and analysts alike. His previous stops at Xavier and Louisville produced winning records and deep tournament runs, underscoring his ability to compete at the highest level.
In a recent interview, Mack praised Athletic Director Rob Higgins for the vision and support that made the rebuild possible, stating his commitment to the university extends beyond the court.
Preparing for Battle
The Bulls are now focused on conditioning and non‑conference matchups against traditional powerhouses such as College of Charleston, Xavier, and Louisville. These early games are designed to test the team’s mettle before conference play begins.
