Chris Mongilia has been hired as the head coach of the Hopewell Valley Central High School boys basketball program, a move that reunites the former Princeton University basketball staffer with a close‑by community where he lives just under a mile away in Pennington, New Jersey.
A New Direction for Hopewell Valley Basketball
Mongilia’s career includes a stint as Director of Basketball Operations for Princeton’s men’s team, where he helped the Tigers capture two Ivy League Tournament titles and reach the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2023. His experience spans high school, AAU and college levels, giving him a broad perspective on player development and game strategy.
Excited to be part of the Hopewell Valley community, Mongilia said he looks forward to meeting players, parents and fellow coaches to introduce his vision. He plans to assess the talent on hand before shaping any tactical approach, emphasizing a fast‑paced, ball‑sharing style that prioritizes joy and excitement.
His coaching philosophy centers on building a program that plays with energy while maintaining control, a approach he says reflects the lessons he learned from mentors such as Rob Kurzinsky, John Dunne and Mitch Henderson during his time at Princeton.
Mongilia’s personal roots in high school sports run deep; his father spent three decades coaching football and his aunt logged a similar tenure in softball. Growing up surrounded by competition, he now balances his new coaching responsibilities with family life and his own business interests.
Kevin Kley, who oversees multiple sports at Hopewell Valley, facilitated the connection that led to Mongilia’s hiring. The new coach will also meet with parents and players in the coming weeks to outline his plans and foster a collaborative environment.
