Middle Township High School has named Christian Mortellite as its new head coach of the boys' basketball program, succeeding LaMarr Greer after five seasons. The school board cited his unique combination of playing pedigree and coaching experience as the primary reason for the appointment.
A Coach Who Knows the Game Inside Out
Mortellite’s basketball journey began in Hammonton, where he excelled at the local high school before moving on to play at Bloomsburg University. At Bloomsburg he set school records for points, three‑point field goals, free throws and free‑throw percentage, establishing himself as one of the program’s all‑time greats.
After graduation he pursued a professional playing career in Portugal before returning to the United States to coach at both Hammonton High School and Stockton University. At Stockton the team reached the NCAA Tournament on two occasions, underscoring his ability to develop talent and compete at a high level.
Now back in South Jersey, Mortellite says his priority is to build on the school’s tradition of excellence by emphasizing hard work, accountability and community engagement. He wants his players to grow not only as athletes but also as citizens.
The appointment has been welcomed by players, parents and alumni alike, who see in Mortellite a role model who has walked the path from small‑town star to professional competitor and back again. His leadership is expected to reinforce the program’s culture while charting a course for future success.
