Christian Spandiary Takes the Helm of Cary-Grove Boys Basketball

Former Coach Brings Defensive Focus and Community Insight to the Program

Christian Spandiary, a former basketball player and coach with a background in special education, has been appointed head coach of the Cary‑Grove boys basketball team, succeeding Adam McCloud who led the program to a 28‑win season and a Fox Valley Conference championship.

Spandiary’s playing career included three Class 4A sectional finals with Schaumburg from 2010 to 2012, where he faced NBA‑caliber opponents, and he earned Mid‑Suburban League West Player of the Year honors after averaging 16 points and five rebounds as a senior.

His coaching journey spans stops at Schaumburg, Fremd and Barrington, where he worked with a range of age groups, and his mentors have included Matt Walsh, Luke Yanule, Jim Sullivan, Bob Widlowski and Bryan Tucker.

Defensive Identity and Community Roots

At a recent press conference, Spandiary outlined a fast‑paced offensive scheme paired with a disciplined man‑to‑man defensive approach, emphasizing speed, discipline and fundamental skills as the foundation for future success.

Although the program will lose its starting five and seven of its top eight scorers, the coach remains confident that returning players such as Evan Bauer, Jackson Berndt, Vinny Strissel, Dan Gordiyenko, Brody Bays and Keon Ash can rise to the challenge.

He also highlighted the strong sense of community he feels in Cary, noting the enthusiastic involvement of students in athletics and extracurricular activities, and mentioned that he and his family reside in Huntley.

Spandiary’s academic credentials include a degree in special education from Illinois State University and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University, underscoring a commitment to holistic player development.

With a clear defensive identity and a roster eager to prove itself, the new coaching staff is poised to reshape the program’s culture while building on the foundation laid by the previous staff.
