The Canton High School baseball squad clinched a spot in the Division 2 state playoffs, capping a whirlwind stretch that saw them win three of four games and finish the regular season at 11‑9, good enough for third place in the Hockomock Davenport Division.
Key moments from a pivotal week
The team opened the flurry with a comeback victory over Stoughton, where senior Teddy Shuman delivered an inside‑the‑park grand slam that capped the rally. Daniel Ferrera went 3‑for‑3, adding a double and two RBIs, while seniors JT Norton and Andrew Gillis each drove in two runs to seal the win.
A few days later, Dean Madden turned in another strong outing, improving to 6‑1 on the season with an ERA of 1.08 against Mansfield. Shuman continued his hot streak, paced the offense with three hits and an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Clutch performances against Framingham
Andrew Gillis provided the game‑winning hit in the opening round of the Harvey Krupnick Classic against Framingham, and right‑hander Chris Pirrera delivered a complete‑game effort, scattering five hits and one walk over seven innings.
The Bulldogs fell to Weston in the tournament final, a loss that head coach Dave Walsh described as a moment when the team looked flat and tired. Nonetheless, Walsh expressed confidence that the squad will bring its "A game" into the upcoming state tournament.
Looking ahead
With a mix of veteran arms, timely hitting and a resilient mindset, the Canton High baseball team enters the playoffs as a competitive contender. The community looks forward to seeing how far the Bulldogs can advance under the guidance of their coaching staff and the leadership of players such as Teddy Shuman, Daniel Ferrera, Andrew Gillis, Dean Madden and Chris Pirrera.
