The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) has announced the classification framework for the 2026 girls field hockey season, dividing schools into three distinct divisions based on enrollment size.
Class Structure Overview
Class L represents the largest tier, encompassing 26 schools that collectively serve at least 608 female students. This division is designed to accommodate the most extensive programs and ensure competitive balance among the state's biggest programs.
Class M includes 25 schools, with enrollment figures ranging from 351 to 607 students. This middle tier provides a bridge between the largest and smallest programs, allowing for balanced competition.
Class S comprises 26 schools, each with fewer than 350 participants. This smallest division highlights the breadth of participation across smaller programs throughout Connecticut.
The season officially opens on Tuesday, September 8, marking the start of regular‑season play. The CIAC tournament will commence on November 10, with preliminary qualifying rounds scheduled for November 5‑7 should they be required.
Championship Destination
The championship games are slated for Saturday, November 21, at Wethersfield High School, providing a central venue for the culmination of the competitive season.
