CIAC Cancels June High School Basketball Showcases, Shifts to Later Summer Events

Executive Director Glenn Lungarini cites declining interest, scheduling conflicts, and NCAA policy considerations as drivers behind the revised schedule.

CIAC Adjusts Summer Basketball Showcase Schedule

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced that its June high school basketball showcases will not take place this year.

Executive director Glenn Lungarini explained that feedback from member schools indicated reduced interest, largely driven by the rise of out‑of‑season coaching that allows teams to train twice weekly for two hours during the summer.

The originally scheduled showcase dates of June 12‑14 and June 18‑20 collided with CIAC spring sports championship games and numerous graduation ceremonies across the state.

In response, the CIAC will conduct basketball events later in the summer, echoing the format of the CIAC 2026 High School Football Showcase that drew strong participation.

Out‑of‑season coaching, which permits coaches to work with their squads for two hours per day, twice a week, has become a key factor shaping the conference’s calendar planning.

While the CIAC’s boys teams are permitted to compete in scholastic events in New Jersey, Nevada, and Philadelphia, girls teams are limited to competitions within New Jersey.

The NEPSAC boys basketball showcases for prep school players are slated for June 12‑14 and June 26‑28, providing an alternative platform for elite talent.

Lungarini highlighted the importance of expanding opportunities for elite athletes across a variety of sports, noting that the future of CIAC scholastic showcases will hinge on forthcoming NCAA policy adjustments regarding recruiting and eligibility.

The decision reflects a broader effort to align summer programming with athlete development goals while minimizing conflicts with other extracurricular commitments.
