Cincinnati Reds shortstop Matt McLain traded his glove for a stack of crayons and pencils last week, spending an hour at Sharefax Credit Union’s headquarters to help local children get ready for the new school year.
The activity was part of the Local 12 Backpack and School Supply Drive, a partnership that brings together professional athletes, youth sports teams and community businesses to assemble backpacks filled with essential supplies.
McLain joined players from an 11U baseball team, sorting items such as glue sticks, notebooks and markers while chatting with the kids about the upcoming season and the importance of giving back.
The supplies will be handed out during the Back to School Bash scheduled for early August, ensuring that dozens of families receive the tools they need to start the academic year with confidence.
Donations of new school supplies are still being accepted at any Sharefax location through the month of July, offering residents a simple way to contribute to the cause.
