Pre‑season camps kick off across Clatsop County
With the first day of practice scheduled for August 28, football squads from Seaside, Astoria and Knappa have turned their attention to summer drills that blend skill work, conditioning and community engagement. The initiatives aim to lay a solid foundation for a season that promises renewed competition within the restructured Cowapa League.
Seaside High School’s camp, overseen by first‑year head coach Dennis Olstedt, runs from August 10 through 13. Olstedt, who previously served as an assistant, emphasizes blocking and tackling fundamentals while also addressing the league’s new tackle regulations. The schedule splits high school athletes into a 4–6 p.m. session and youth participants into a 6:30–8:30 p.m. slot, with a $45 fee per player.
Across the river, Astoria’s Fishermen will host a commitment camp at Astoria High School during the same dates. The program focuses on refining techniques and boosting conditioning, preparing both varsity and junior varsity athletes for the upcoming campaign. Emphasis is placed on team cohesion and readiness for the 4A state playoff picture.
Knappa’s football camp, themed “as one,” extends from August 11 to 15 and includes instruction for high school and junior high players, as well as a separate K‑6 session. Campers receive a complimentary t‑shirt, and the event culminates in a community barbecue that features pulled pork, coleslaw, soda, water and macaroni salad. Donations are welcomed to support the program.
Beyond skill development, the camps serve as a rallying point for local fans and families. Youth participants gain early exposure to varsity coaches, while parents and community members enjoy the social atmosphere of the barbecues and fundraising activities. The collective effort underscores a shared goal: to compete strongly in the new league structure and chase playoff berths.
