Clay High School Baseball Team Advances to FHSAA Class 4A Semifinals After Turnaround

Coach Josh Persinger's squad, led by standout pitchers and a resilient spirit, prepares for a showdown with top‑ranked Tampa Jesuit

A Midseason Revival

The Clay High School baseball team has transformed a rocky start into a compelling postseason run, securing a spot in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A semifinals.

Coach Josh Persinger never wavered in his belief, urging players to ignore the early won‑lost record and focus on the process that would eventually bring them together.

At the heart of the revival is a pitching staff that has been nearly untouchable, anchored by junior right‑hander Rylan McMahan, who boasts a 1.44 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings.

Catchers and extra‑base threats such as JC Rosette have added depth, while the squad’s chemistry has been forged through rigorous practice habits and a gritty will to win.

The Blue Devils will meet Tampa Jesuit at 10 a.m. on May 19 in Fort Myers, a matchup that pits Clay’s modest roster against a powerhouse lineup featuring Mississippi State commit Wilson Andersen and Duke commit Griffin Boesen.

Tampa Jesuit arrives with its own ace rotation, including Florida State commit Kaden Waechter and LSU commit Samir Mohammed, making the semifinal a clash of top talent.

Beyond the field, the run has sparked community pride across Green Cove Springs, Keystone Heights and surrounding areas, reminding many that perseverance can rewrite a season’s story.
