Clemson University’s baseball program is navigating a significant transition as Nick Schnabel, who had served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator for four years, announced his departure.
A familiar partnership reshapes
Schnabel and head coach Erik Bakich share a long‑standing connection that dates back to their days as teammates at Michigan and East Carolina, a bond that has now evolved into a professional collaboration that is being re‑examined after Schnabel’s exit.
In the wake of the vacancy, Griffin Mazur, who began his coaching journey as a volunteer assistant on Bakich’s staff at Michigan in 2022, will now oversee recruiting coordination. Having spent the past three seasons working full‑time with the catchers, Mazur brings an intimate understanding of the program’s needs to the role.
Bakich has said he will take a more hands‑on role in daily coaching, aiming to blend offensive and defensive expertise in the next assistant he hires. The search is focused on finding a candidate who can complement the staff while the Tigers look to rebuild on the momentum of a 31‑26 overall record.
Looking ahead
The coming season will test how quickly the new recruiting structure can translate into on‑field success. With Bakich’s increased involvement and Mazur’s fresh perspective, the program hopes to return to the NCAA Tournament and contend for a championship in the ACC.
