Clemson Receives Boost as Court Clears Path for 2026 Return
A South Carolina judge has granted Tristan Smith a temporary injunction that blocks the NCAA from enforcing its denial of a waiver that would have cost the Clemson wide receiver a fifth year of eligibility.
Judge Jessica Ann Salvini issued the ruling on Jan. 21 in Pickens County, clearing the way for Smith to be eligible for the 2026‑2027 season and allowing the NCAA to be restrained from applying the penalty while the case proceeds.
Rejoining a Revamped Receiving Corps
Smith’s legal victory comes as he prepares to rejoin a receiving corps that already features Bryant Wesco Jr., T.J. Moore, Tyler Brown and Cole Turner, a group that could reshape the Tigers’ offensive options next fall.
During the 2025 campaign Smith logged 24 catches for 239 yards and one touchdown across 13 games, but an ankle injury limited his participation in spring practice and raised questions about his readiness for the upcoming season.
The decision underscores the growing intersection of collegiate athletics and legal challenges, and it may set a precedent for other players seeking additional eligibility under similar circumstances.
