A Versatile Defender Joins the Tigers
Clemson’s 2026 recruiting class received a significant boost when RJ Hudson, a highly touted linebacker from Varina High School in Richmond, Virginia, announced his commitment to the Tigers. The 6‑1, 205‑pound prospect chose the ACC powerhouse over a slate of other programs, becoming the 23rd verbal pledge in the class.
Hudson’s junior season was nothing short of spectacular. He tallied 45 tackles, 13 sacks, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and an interception, helping Varina capture the Class 4 state championship. His dominant performances on the defensive line and at linebacker drew attention from several top programs.
The recruitment process saw Hudson initially projected as a defensive end, but a hamstring injury limited his participation in drills at that position during the Dabo Swinney Camp. Despite the setback, he impressed coaches by working out at linebacker, showcasing the versatility that attracted multiple offers.
Hudson’s list of suitors included Penn State, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Maryland, James Madison and Old Dominion, among others. He first visited Clemson in mid‑April for the school’s Spring Elite Day, an experience that appeared to cement his interest. Clemson’s persistence in recruiting him, including a second campus visit, ultimately paid off.
Beyond the numbers, Hudson’s commitment signals a continued focus on adding athletic, multi‑position talent to the Tigers’ defense. Coaches expect his pass‑rushing ability and sideline-to‑sideline speed to contribute immediately, reinforcing Clemson’s depth as the program looks ahead to the next season.
