Clemson basketball center Carter Welling tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the second round of the ACC Tournament against Wake Forest, a blow that could keep him out of action until late 2026.
Medical experts typically estimate a nine‑to‑twelve‑month window for full healing after an ACL rupture, meaning the 6‑foot‑11 sophomore may not see game minutes until December at the earliest.
Coach Brad Brownell, speaking after the injury, said he remains hopeful that Welling’s rehabilitation will progress steadily and that the big man could be ready for the team's first few contests of the 2026‑27 campaign.
In Welling’s absence, the Tigers will lean on transfers David Fuchs and Dylan Faulkner, as well as freshman forward Will Stevens, to provide depth in the paint and on the boards.
The early schedule will test that depth, with Clemson slated to compete in the Maui Invitational, open the season against Cincinnati, and later face Auburn in an ACC/SEC challenge.
Freshman Zac Foster is also working his way back from a back injury, but Brownell expects him to be fully available for the start of the season.
Roster reshaping and future outlook
The injury underscores a challenging period for the program, which also saw the departure of Welling from Utah Valley after his sophomore year and his subsequent transfer to Clemson. While the loss of a key frontcourt player is significant, the depth added through transfers and freshmen offers a promising avenue for the Tigers to maintain competitiveness as they navigate a demanding non‑conference slate.
