Cliff Orwick has been named the new head football coach at Lakewood High School, taking over from L.J. Clark, who served as the program’s leader for fifteen years.
A New Direction for Lancer Football
Orwick arrives after a diverse coaching journey that spanned high schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina and New Jersey, most recently at Monmouth Regional where he helped secure a Shore Conference National Division title in 2021.
Clark’s departure was unexpected, coming just months before the upcoming season and after a tenure that produced seven straight state playoff appearances from 2012 to 2017. His record at Lakewood stands at 60‑90, a period marked by both growth and challenges.
The transition has sparked conversation among families and alumni. Dante Clark, the coach’s son, publicly defended his father at a recent Board of Education meeting, highlighting the personal stakes involved in the change.
Orwick, a 2004 graduate of West Chester University where he played defensive line, brings a player‑first mindset and a commitment to building a sustainable program. He has outlined plans to strengthen youth outreach, improve conditioning and develop a competitive varsity schedule.
With four new head coaches entering the Shore Conference this year, the league is poised for fresh storylines. Lakewood’s administration expressed confidence that Orwick’s experience and local ties will help restore momentum and community pride in the Lancers program.
