Clint Schnell has been named the new head coach of the Randall Raiders boys basketball program, succeeding Trevor Johnson, who departed to become principal at Claude Independent School District. Schnell’s appointment follows a thorough search that attracted the most applicants since Peterson assumed the role of athletic director.
A Return to Roots
A native of Spearman, Schnell grew up amid the basketball culture of the Texas Panhandle. His desire to reconnect with his hometown roots played a decisive role in his decision to accept the position, which he described as an opportunity to add to a tradition he deeply respects.
Schnell’s coaching résumé includes head coaching stints at Arlington Martin and Coppell in the Dallas‑Fort Worth Metroplex, as well as a recent tenure as an assistant under Jason Pillion at Amarillo High. His extensive experience at both the high school and metroplex levels equipped him with the leadership skills that district officials cited as key to his selection.
Legacy and Expectations
The Raiders program, long anchored by leaders such as Leslie Broadhurst, boasts a storied history of competitive success. District officials believe Schnell’s familiarity with the region and his respect for that legacy will help maintain continuity while steering the team toward fresh achievements.
Chris Sumrall, who previously guided Wellington and Tascosa, will step in as the new assistant at Amarillo High, ensuring a smooth transition for Schnell’s former team. The move underscores the interconnected nature of coaching movements across the Panhandle.
Looking Ahead
As Schnell prepares to take the reins, he emphasizes building on the foundation laid by previous coaches while introducing his own vision. Players and staff alike anticipate a season that blends tradition with innovation, aiming to keep the Raiders among the elite in Texas basketball.
