Coach Michael Williams' Contract Offer Stirs Legal Turmoil at Pine Bluff High School
Pine Bluff High School football coach Micheal Williams was presented with a contract for the 2026‑27 school year, but he will remain on paid leave while an investigation proceeds.
Williams filed a federal lawsuit against the Pine Bluff School District, Superintendent Jennifer Barbaree and several board members, alleging violations of his constitutional rights, including denial of due process and an inadequate name‑clearing hearing.
The school board voted unanimously, 6‑0, to extend the contract under the same terms as his current agreement, contingent on his continued leave until the Arkansas Department of Education completes its review.
Community members and Williams’ attorney, Mircha King, have criticized the board’s proposal for a five‑minute hearing, arguing that the time allotment and notice are insufficient for a meaningful review.
Board President Arnold Robertson Jr. indicated that the duration of the hearing was of little consequence, while board member Ricky Whitmore Jr. suggested that Williams stay on leave until the state investigation concludes.
Judge Lee Rudofsky has urged the district’s legal team to consider a more robust name‑clearing process, and Williams is seeking a preliminary injunction to secure a constitutionally adequate hearing and damages from the defendants.
Superintendent Barbaree and district attorney Cody Kees declined to comment, and the lawsuit notes that Williams was never informed he could have a union representative or counsel present during questioning.
