A Coach’s Pause and a Promise of Return
Nick Weiermiller, the head coach of Elmira Notre Dame’s boys basketball team, revealed this week that he will step away from the sidelines to focus on his newborn son, Colton, who has been undergoing treatment for a unilateral cleft lip and palate. The condition required two surgical procedures, and the family has been traveling weekly to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for care.
Weiermiller said the decision was not made lightly, noting the unwavering support he has received from his partner, Chylene Hardiman, and their older children, Ariel Adamy and Logan Adamy. The community, including players, parents and school officials, rallied around the family during a season that culminated in a state‑quarterfinal loss.
Despite the setback on the court, Weiermiller remains committed to his other responsibilities at Notre Dame, serving as the school’s director of admissions. He emphasized that the experience has deepened his appreciation for the institution’s culture and the dedication of its students.
Looking ahead, the coach outlined a tentative timeline that targets a return to the bench for the 2027‑28 season, giving the family time to navigate additional surgeries and therapy that Colton will need. In the meantime, he will continue to guide the program from behind the scenes.
School officials expressed confidence that the team will remain competitive next year, citing a strong returning roster and the continued involvement of assistant coaches. Weiermiller’s dual role as admissions director and former player adds a unique perspective that he hopes to bring back to the locker room when he returns.
