University of North Carolina Wilmington basketball coach Nicole Woods took her daughters and niece and nephew to Wrightsville Beach for a family outing, eager to enjoy a sunny day on the Atlantic coast.
During the outing, her 8‑year‑old nephew turned his back to the waves and was instantly swept underwater by a breaking surf. Woods raced to his aid, but the pair were quickly caught in a powerful rip current that dragged them both out to sea.
A rescue team eventually pulled Woods and her nephew from the water. At the moment they were extracted, Woods was not breathing and had no detectable pulse, a stark reminder of how swiftly a recreational swim can turn perilous.
A Fight for Recovery and Awareness
Emergency responders administered chest compressions and used an automated external defibrillator, restoring a pulse. Woods was then placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she remained for several days before breathing on her own.
Doctors later confirmed that, despite being submerged for multiple minutes, Woods showed no signs of cognitive impairment. Her recovery was described as remarkable by the medical staff.
