The Coastal Women’s Hockey League, based in Kingston, has swelled to eight teams since its modest start in 2005, offering a rare blend of competition and camaraderie for women of all ages.
A Season Without Standings
Games are structured in two 25‑minute halves with a running clock, and the league deliberately forgoes any formal standings, emphasizing participation over ranking.
Players travel from as far north as Boston and Cape Cod down through Rhode Island, drawn by the chance to stay active, forge friendships, and keep the sport alive beyond the school years.
The schedule includes tournaments such as the Hockey Fights MS event in Vermont and the Cross‑Check Cancer tournament in Haverhill, turning each match into a fundraiser for charitable causes.
Among the newest recruits are Kristi Greenwood and Sam Dormady, who first watched their children on the ice before stepping onto the rink themselves.
More Than a Game
Beyond the rink, the league serves as a community hub, linking families across Massachusetts towns and fostering a spirit of inclusion that extends into local charities and school programs.
