A promising career cut short
Cody Hagen, a BYU wide receiver, announced his retirement from football this week, citing the cumulative effect of numerous injuries that have limited his availability over the past two seasons.
The junior had been a key contributor in 2025, logging 13 games and ranking third on the team with over 430 offensive snaps. He finished the season with 12 receptions for 97 yards and added 9 carries for 93 yards, highlighted by a 32‑yard touchdown in the fourth quarter against Colorado.
Hagen's injury woes intensified during the latter half of the 2024 campaign, forcing him to miss several critical stretches. Despite the setbacks, he remained a standout on the practice field, earning praise during BYU's Spring Camp for his speed and productivity.
Before arriving at BYU, Hagen was a four‑star recruit from Utah, where he posted a 10.52‑second 100‑meter dash and was recognized as one of the state's most productive high school receivers.
His departure leaves BYU without three of its most experienced pass‑catchers from the 2025 roster — Chase Roberts, Parker Kingston, and Hagen himself — creating ample opportunity for emerging talents such as Reggie Frischknecht, Tei Nacua, Legend Glasker, Jaron Pula, and Terrance Saryon to step into larger roles.
Off the field, Hagen was engaged to be married in June, underscoring the personal dimensions of his decision to move on from the sport.
