In July 2026 the Columbus Blue Jackets announced the hiring of Cody Ward as their new video coach, a move that consolidates a decade of experience across three continents. Ward’s appointment follows a rapid rise that began in the minor leagues and culminated in a championship‑winning environment abroad.
Before joining the Jackets, Ward served as an assistant video coach for the San Jose Sharks from 2022 through 2026, where he helped refine scouting reports and player development footage. His earlier role with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves saw him lead the video department during the team’s Calder Cup run in 2021‑22, a season that cemented his reputation as a tech‑savvy strategist.
Ward’s international chapter unfolded with Germany’s top‑flight club Die Adler Mannheim, where he coordinated video operations during a DEL championship season in 2014‑15. The experience broadened his tactical perspective and introduced European analytical methods that he now plans to integrate into the Blue Jackets’ workflow.
A graduate of Canisius College with a degree in sports management earned in 2021, Ward also spent four years as video coordinator and student manager for the college’s men’s hockey program. His roots in Kitchener, Ontario, remain a touchstone, and he often cites the city’s tight‑knit hockey community as a formative influence.
The Blue Jackets’ leadership believes Ward’s blend of North American and European video expertise will accelerate player development and enhance opponent scouting. General Manager Jarmo Kekkonen praised the hire, noting that Ward’s “global outlook and technical acumen align perfectly with our ambition to innovate on and off the ice.”
