A Dual Commitment in Context
Cole Swanson, a 22‑year‑old forward from Hibbing/Chisholm, Minnesota, has officially pledged to continue his hockey career at Western Michigan University while also signing with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede for the 2027‑28 season.
During his sophomore year he recorded 29 goals and 34 assists, following a freshman season that yielded 20 goals and 34 assists, helping the Bluejackets capture the 2025‑26 state championship.
His older brother Tate, who previously led the same team to the championship game, is now competing in Canada’s BCJHL with the Nanaimo Clippers, underscoring a family legacy in the sport.
Earlier in 2025 Swanson served a suspension after an obscene gesture was captured during a championship game, an incident that drew attention but did not derail his recruitment momentum.
Under recent NCAA rule changes, his eligibility clock will begin in the 2027‑28 season, positioning him to enter college play after completing his USHL stint, a timeline that aligns with his designation as the 2025 News Tribune All‑Area Player of the Year.
Coaches and analysts view the dual commitment as a calculated step, balancing immediate professional development in the USHL with a collegiate pathway that could lead to higher‑level opportunities.
