A new frontier for collegiate sports
Indiana Institute of Technology and Rochester Christian University announced that they will field varsity women's flag football teams beginning in the 2027‑28 academic year, marking the latest additions to a sport that has been gaining momentum across the nation's college campuses.
Both schools revealed plans to hire head coaches during the 2026‑27 year to recruit student‑athletes, a move highlighted by Jessie Biggs, Director of Athletics at Indiana Tech, who noted the sport's accelerating trajectory at the NAIA level.
Dr. Jaime Cuellar, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at Rochester Christian University, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the growing popularity of flag football and its potential to open new pathways for female athletes.
Conference realignments and expanding participation
The Wolverine‑Hoosier Athletic Conference now counts four varsity women's flag football programs, while institutions such as Defiance College and the University of Northwestern Ohio compete as affiliates of the Mid‑South Conference. Other schools, including Lourdes University and Siena Heights University, have previously explored or launched programs before closing or pausing their efforts.
The NAIA projects that roughly 60 varsity programs will compete in the spring of 2027, a figure that leadership expects to rise sharply by 2028 as more conferences and institutions adopt the sport.
The upcoming season will also see new entrants such as Culver‑Stockton College, Faulkner University and Saint Mary‑of‑the‑Woods College join the NAIA lineup, while Providence College in Rhode Island prepares to launch a student‑run club team, the first of its kind in the state.
Providence, a NCAA Division I member in the Big East Conference, will join nearly 85 club teams nationwide that are slated to compete in Division I for the 2026‑27 year, a group that includes over 60 squads operating under the National Collegiate Flag Football Association and NIRSA.
In Florida, the University of Tampa is set to enter NIRSA’s Women's Flag Football Club League for the 2026‑27 academic year alongside Atlantis University, with the league currently boasting 52 announced teams and a sign‑up deadline of October 1, 2026.
