Chris MacFarland, the Colorado Avalanche’s general manager, has been named a finalist for the 2025‑26 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award, a distinction that underscores a transformative season for the franchise.
A Record‑Setting Campaign
Under MacFarland’s stewardship the Avalanche held the NHL’s overall lead from early November through the final day of the regular season, culminating in a league‑best 121 points and the organization’s fourth Presidents’ Trophy.
The team’s dominance extended to both ends of the ice, marking only the fourth expansion‑era club to top the league in both goals scored and goals allowed, while also securing a ninth straight playoff berth.
MacFarland’s roster moves proved pivotal: he kept forward Brock Nelson in place, added veteran defenseman Brent Burns in free agency, and traded for Nazem Kadri, Brett Kulak, Nicolas Roy and Nick Blankenberg, each acquisition bolstering depth and stability.
This is the first time MacFarland has reached the final list for the award, a milestone that follows the precedent set by his predecessor Joe Sakic, who captured the honor in 2021‑22, and reflects the continuity of strong leadership within the front office.
The Jim Gregory Award, first presented in 2009‑10 and renamed in 2019‑20 to honor the late NHL executive, recognizes excellence in general management, and MacFarland’s nomination places the Avalanche among the contenders alongside other notable figures such as Bill Guerin and Pat Verbeek.
The nomination also highlights the broader impact of the Avalanche’s front office, which continues to shape a competitive roster that now includes key contributors from both the draft and strategic acquisitions, positioning the club for a deep playoff run.
