The Colorado Avalanche announced this week that they have signed forward Georgii Merkulov to a one‑year contract, a move aimed at bolstering the team’s depth heading into the upcoming season.
A Strategic Addition for the Avalanche
Merkulov, 25, brings a blend of AHL productivity and limited NHL experience, having appeared in 11 games for the Boston Bruins during the 2023‑24 campaign and posting a modest point.
Last season in the American Hockey League he recorded 24 goals and 61 points in 70 games, a performance that helped his side finish near the top of the league and earned him a spot among the league’s leading assist providers.
He was a primary catalyst on a line that included rookie Fabian Lysell, with whom he shared the team’s highest point total, and his playmaking contributed to a surge in offensive output during the second half of the schedule.
Merkulov’s collegiate career at Ohio State University also left a mark, where he earned Big Ten First All‑Star Team honors and was named to the Big Ten All‑Freshman Team, highlighting his early promise.
Originally an undrafted free‑agent, he signed with the Boston Bruins in April 2022, a pathway that eventually led to his current contract with Colorado.
The deal reflects the Avalanche’s intent to blend youthful energy with proven AHL talent, positioning the club for a stronger showing in the competitive Western Conference.
