A Russian Goalkeeper Joins Colorado's Roster
The Colorado Avalanche announced the signing of Nikita Novosyolov, an undrafted Russian goaltender, to a two‑year, entry‑level contract. The move adds depth to a crease that already includes Mackenzie Blackwood, Scott Wedgewood, Trent Miner, Isak Posch and Ilya Nabokov, all of whom are under contract for the upcoming season.
Novosyolov, 21, spent the bulk of the 2025‑26 campaign with Gornyak‑UGMK in the VHL, posting a .932 save percentage across 40 regular‑season appearances and recording three shutouts. His performance placed him sixth in wins and tenth in save percentage league‑wide, underscoring his emergence as a reliable prospect.
In addition to his VHL duties, the netminder appeared in three KHL games for Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, where he has been teammates with fellow Avalanche prospect Nikita Ishimnikov since the 2022‑23 season. The familiarity between the two could influence the Russian’s adaptation to North American hockey, should he choose that path.
Future Plans Remain Uncertain
The Avalanche have not disclosed whether Novosyolov will remain on loan in Russia or attempt to make the jump to the AHL or NHL roster next season. The team already boasts a crowded goalie depth chart, meaning the Russian will need to earn a spot in training camp or secure a professional contract abroad.
If he does come to North America, he will join a competitive mix of established veterans and emerging talent, a scenario that could accelerate his development but also limit immediate playing time. The organization’s decision will likely hinge on his performance in preseason evaluations and the club’s injury outlook.
