A flurry of moves shakes the Avalanche roster
Colorado’s front office has been busy, completing three separate trades that saw forward Ross Colton, center Jack Drury and star winger Valeri Nichushkin change teams.
In the deal that sent Drury out, General Manager Joe Sakic brought in prospects Fedor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux, adding depth to the pipeline.
The moves have cleared just under $11 million in salary‑cap space, giving the Avalanche flexibility they lacked under the previous roster constraints.
But the team still faces gaps on the blue line and in the top six forward group, prompting the front office to explore both external options and internal solutions.
Potential reinforcements and internal options
Names such as Mario Ferraro surface as potential defensive reinforcements, while internal candidates like Nicolas Roy and Nazem Kadri could fill the void left by departing forwards.
Draft and free agency on the horizon
The NHL Draft kicks off on Friday and wraps up on Saturday, a timeline that will reveal which prospects the Avalanche target as they rebuild their defensive core.
Free agency opens on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Mountain Time, a date that will test how aggressively Colorado can pursue external talent now that cap space is available.
Phase 1 of Sakic’s plan
The next week will determine whether these trades are merely the opening moves of a broader overhaul or the first phase of a longer‑term strategy outlined by Sakic.
