A Dark Trend in Youth Hockey
Rory Nathaniel Mushlin, a 40‑year‑old youth hockey coach from Colorado Springs, was taken into custody on Tuesday after a multi‑agency investigation revealed a series of sexual assaults, unlawful electronic communications and possession of child‑exploitation material involving underage players on his teams.
Mushlin had been supervising youth teams at the South Suburban Sports Complex in Highlands Ranch, as well as at the Parker Field House and the Family Sports Center since 2023. According to court filings, the alleged abuse occurred over several months and involved multiple victims who were under the legal age of consent.
The case echoes a high‑profile scandal from earlier this year when former Colorado coach Kevin Whitmer pleaded no contest to twelve counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under fourteen and one count of possessing child sexual abuse material. Whitmer’s misconduct, which spanned facilities in San José and Colorado, resulted in a 25‑year prison sentence and a $4.6 million civil settlement involving Sharks Sports & Entertainment, the operator of the Sharks Ice arenas.
Whitmer’s conviction exposed what investigators described as systemic breakdowns in the enforcement of USA Hockey safety protocols, prompting calls for stricter vetting and monitoring of coaches who have direct, unsupervised access to minors. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, which led the current arrest, emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that further charges may follow.
The revelations have sparked a broader conversation about the culture of youth sports, with The Denver Post reporter Sam Tabachnik noting that “the pattern of abuse is not isolated to a single program but reflects a deeper failure in oversight across the sport.” Authorities have urged parents, leagues and governing bodies to demand transparent background checks and independent supervision of all coaching staff.
