Colton Nussmeier, a 4‑star quarterback ranked No. 17 among the class of 2027 by 247Sports, announced his commitment to the University of Georgia after a turbulent high‑school recruitment that began in Texas.
The decision came after the Texas UIL ruled him ineligible for transferring from Marcus High to Denton Ryan, a ruling that survived multiple appeals and forced the family to seek a new environment.
Seeking stability, Nussmeier and his family relocated to Rummel High in Louisiana, a school situated just eight miles from the New Orleans workplace of his father, Doug Nussmeier, who serves as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and brings 11 years of NFL assistant experience, including stints at Florida, Michigan and Alabama.
Doug Nussmeier’s professional ties stretch back to his time at Alabama, where he worked alongside Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, forging a relationship that would later influence Colton’s recruitment narrative.
At Rummel, the quarterback posted 1,390 yards on 167 attempts with 12 touchdowns and a single interception, numbers that helped cement his status as the No. 221 overall prospect nationally.
The move also placed him among elite company, as his younger brother Garrett Nussmeier had previously committed to LSU, adding a familial layer to the recruiting story.
When asked about his choice, Colton highlighted the chance to play for Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, citing Georgia’s championship pedigree and the opportunity to grow up watching the Bulldogs dominate the SEC.
The commitment marks a full‑circle moment for the Nussmeier family, who now see a direct pathway from Louisiana to the Bulldogs’ storied program.
