A Setback for a Future Bulldog
The NCAA has announced that Colton Nussmeier, the highly touted quarterback recruit who had pledged to the Georgia Bulldogs, will be ineligible for the 2026 season. The decision stems from a recent move the player made within Texas, a transfer that triggered a residency rule violation.
Nussmeier, son of New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and brother of former LSU Tigers starter Garrett Nussmeier, grew up immersed in football. His family’s deep roots in the sport added a layer of expectation, but the young quarterback chose to commit to Georgia after an official visit on June 5.
The recruitment battle was fierce, with Alabama, Arkansas and UCLA all vying for his signature. Yet it was the Bulldogs’ culture and coaching staff that ultimately swayed Nussmeier, who impressed at the Elite 11 camp with his precision and ability to thread tight‑window throws.
While the ineligibility means he will miss the upcoming campaign, sources close to the program say the setback has done little to shake his commitment. Coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia staff have reiterated that the pledge remains intact, and fans can expect the quarterback to join the roster when the restriction lifts.
