The Columbia High Eagles finally broke a 101‑game winless streak that had stretched back to 2015, delivering a 41‑14 triumph over Greensboro High’s Raiders on Friday night.
The victory marks the first win for the Eagles since a 2015 victory, ending the longest losing streak in the nation and signaling a dramatic turnaround for a program that had been mired in disappointment.
Culture Over Numbers
Head coach Sammie Coates, a former Auburn standout and NFL draft pick who took over the program in 2024, said the win was less about the scoreboard and more about the culture he has been trying to instill.
Coates emphasized player development and commitment, noting that the team’s identity was built on effort and unity rather than sheer talent.
The Eagles entered the game with only 28 players, roughly half the size of most opponents, but rallied after trailing 14‑0 early in the first quarter.
A quick adjustment at halftime sparked a comeback, and the Eagles tied the game before pulling away in the second half with a barrage of touchdowns.
Coates described the team’s effort as a "blessing," praising the players’ hard work and dedication that finally paid dividends.
The roster has since expanded to about 60 athletes, reflecting a growing belief in the program and a shift in mindset among the student body.
Looking ahead, Columbia aims to build on this momentum when they host East Limestone High’s Indians on Friday night, hoping to start a two‑game winning streak.
