Golden Bears dominate early and late to hand Lions their first loss of the season

Columbia University’s field hockey squad traveled to Berkeley on Sunday, where they faced the California Golden Bears at Underhill Field and suffered a 4-0 shutout.

Game Highlights

The Golden Bears (3-0) controlled possession, taking 15 shots while Columbia managed only eight, and opened the scoring early when Liz Klompmaker found the net at 1:14 of the first quarter.

Klompmaker added a second goal with 10:12 remaining in the third period, and the Bears completed the rout with two more scores from penalty corners in the final minutes, while Columbia’s first attempt was stopped by Cal goalkeeper Carine Van Weichen.

Lions goalkeeper Margot Houle made four saves, including two in the second and third quarters, and was unable to prevent the final blow as Agustina Solari Etcheberry’s last effort was blocked when the clock expired.

The loss dropped Columbia to a 1-1 record for the season, while California improved to 3-0, and the Lions will look to rebound with a home opener against the University at Albany this Friday at 3 p.m.
