A New Pathway for Young Players
The Columbia Youth Football League is introducing a novel feeder program that begins as early as kindergarten, aiming to bridge the gap between youth leagues and high school football. By aligning coaching methods and team cultures, the initiative seeks to give players a continuous developmental experience.
Coaches Shawn Gaines, Sean Nevills, Justin Conyers, Joe Griffin and Joey Wilmes from Rock Bridge, Hickman and Battle high schools are actively participating, providing mentorship, practice plans and feedback to the younger squads. Their involvement is intended to ensure that the instructional approach remains consistent from elementary through senior levels.
The feeder teams will contest a six‑week season that kicks off in late July, with home games held at Cosmo Park. Recent upgrades to the park’s fields, funded by community donations, have improved the playing surface and spectator experience.
Investing in Coaching Excellence
Beyond player development, the league is also focusing on coach education. High schools are offering workshops on practice organization and age‑appropriate skill drills, turning the program into a training ground for future middle school and high school coaches.
The league will also cover the cost of pads and insurance for participants who wish to pursue competitive football after the feeder season, removing financial barriers that often limit access. Registration for the upcoming fall season remains open until July 15, inviting families to enroll their children in the pilot program.
